When Does Your Puppy Need to Be Vaccinated?

Your puppy should be vaccinated around six weeks of age. This is crucial because your puppy will need to receive a vaccination for canine parvovirus, which can be deadly. Vaccines can also provide protection against parainfluenza, canine distemper, canine hepatitis, and leptospirosis.

After the initial set of vaccines, your puppy will need a series of shots every three to four weeks for the first 16 weeks of life. Once your pet receives all these vaccines, he or she is safe to be near other dogs and to go on walks outside. It is also around this time that your puppy will receive a vaccination for rabies.

Every one to three years, your dog will need booster shots. Your vet will also discuss other diseases that your dog may be at higher risk of contracting.

When Does Your Kitten Need to Be Vaccinated?

Your kitten's first vaccinations should be administered at about eight weeks old. At this time, your kitten will be vaccinated for feline distemper, feline viral rhinotracheitis, feline calicivirus, and feline Chlamydial infections. Our vet may also recommend a vaccine for the feline leukemia virus.

Kittens are like puppies in that they need vaccines every three to four weeks until they are 16 weeks old. At this point, cats will also receive the rabies vaccine.

Every year, your pet will be evaluated for future vaccine needs. Cats often need boosters for rabies, feline leukemia virus, and more. Cats who go outside may need additional vaccines.
